How to Stop Cat Litter Box Smell: What Actually Works
How to Stop Cat Litter Box Smell: What Actually Works

Short answer: litter box smell comes from protein fermenting in the colon instead of being digested. The fixes that work are higher protein digestibility, no grain, no meat meal, live probiotics, daily scooping, and enough unscented litter depth. Most households see a clear reduction within two to four weeks of changing the food — deodorisers only mask it.

Where the smell actually comes from

When a cat cannot digest all the protein it ate, the leftovers reach the colon and bacteria ferment them. That fermentation produces the sulphur compounds and amines that make a room smell. So the strength of the smell is a fairly direct signal of how much undigested protein is arriving at the end of the digestive tract.

That is why air purifiers and scented litter do not solve it. You can mask the output, but the cause is upstream.

1. Fix digestibility first

This does more than everything else on this list combined. A food your cat absorbs efficiently produces less fermentable material. In practice that means named fresh meats rather than rendered meal, no grain fillers, and a cooking method that does not damage the protein.

Our recipes run up to 81.1% fresh meats, 0% meat meal, grain-free and up to 45% protein, slow-baked at 90°C. Owners switching from a grain-heavy supermarket kibble typically report the biggest single change in odour of anything they have tried.

2. Live probiotics, applied after cooking

Probiotics shift the gut population toward bacteria that produce less gas and less odoriferous by-product. As with digestion, the culture has to survive manufacturing — it must be applied after baking with a stated count. Ours is 30 billion active cultures per recipe.

3. Check for the things that make stool smell worse

  • High-fat, oil-sprayed kibble — fat that is not absorbed ferments.
  • Sudden food changes — an unsettled gut smells worse for a week or two.
  • Overfeeding — more in, more undigested out.
  • Table scraps and dairy — most adult cats are lactose intolerant.
  • Parasites — giardia and worms both produce unusually foul stool.

4. Litter box hygiene, done properly

Even perfect food smells through a badly managed box. The standard that works:

  • Scoop twice a day, not once a week. Smell compounds as waste sits.
  • 3–5 cm of unscented clumping litter — deep enough to bury, unscented so you can smell problems early.
  • One box per cat, plus one. Two cats means three boxes.
  • Full litter change every 2–3 weeks, washing the tray with unscented soap and drying it fully.
  • Replace scratched trays. Plastic scratches harbour bacteria permanently; no amount of washing removes it.
  • Move the box away from food and from humid corners — humidity amplifies odour.

5. Ventilation and placement

A box in an enclosed bathroom with no airflow will smell regardless of diet. A covered box traps odour and concentrates it, and many cats dislike them enough to start eliminating elsewhere. An open box in a ventilated spot with a nearby window or fan usually beats every deodoriser on the market.

6. Water intake

Dehydrated cats produce more concentrated waste. A fountain or one wet meal a day supports both stool quality and urinary health, and it is the cheapest change on this list.

When the smell means something medical

See a vet if the stool is unusually foul and any of these are true: greasy or pale stool, weight loss despite a good appetite, vomiting, blood or mucus, or diarrhoea lasting more than two days. Malabsorption, parasites, pancreatitis and inflammatory bowel disease all change stool odour, and none of them are fixed by switching kibble.

Frequently asked

Do litter deodorisers work?

They mask. If you can still smell the box through the deodoriser, the cause is the food or a medical issue, not the litter.

Does grain-free food reduce smell?

Usually yes, because grain is the least digestible part of a typical dry diet. Less undigested material reaching the colon means less fermentation and less odour.

Is a covered litter box better for smell?

Worse, for most homes. It traps odour inside, and the stale air inside the box also discourages the cat from using it.

How fast will I notice a difference?

Within 2 to 4 weeks on a more digestible diet, after allowing a 7-day transition. Our 100 g trial pack is designed for exactly that test.
