Short answer: stool volume is mostly indigestible filler. Foods heavy in corn, wheat, soy, rice bran and meat meal produce more waste because less of the bag is absorbed. Moving to a grain-free food with high digestibility, fresh whole meats instead of rendered meal, and live probiotics typically reduces stool size and frequency within two to three weeks.

The physics of a litter box

A cat's stool is what is left after digestion. If a food is 85% usable, 15% comes out. If it is 65% usable, 35% comes out. That is the entire mechanism — and it explains why two bags with identical protein percentages can produce wildly different amounts of litter waste.

Owners usually describe this as “my cat poops so much”. The cat is not the problem. The bag is.

1. Cut the fillers

Corn, wheat, soy and rice bran exist in dry food to add bulk cheaply. Cats digest them poorly, so most of that volume exits the other end. A grain-free food removes the single largest source of unnecessary stool in the average Malaysian dry diet.

2. Choose fresh meat over rendered meal

“Chicken meal” is a dried, rendered concentrate. It is not poisonous, but it is less digestible than fresh muscle meat and is often bulked with bone and connective tissue that the cat cannot use. Bags that state a fresh meat percentage and “0% meat meal” are telling you the waste fraction is lower.

3. Add live probiotics

Gut bacteria determine how completely protein is broken down. A healthier microbiome extracts more nutrition from the same amount of food, which means less residue. Probiotics only work if they survived the manufacturing process — they must be applied after cooking, with a stated count.

4. Feed to weight, not to appetite

Free-feeding an always-full bowl is the second most common cause of excess stool after poor-quality food. A cat eating 30% more than it needs produces roughly 30% more waste. Measure the daily ration against the bag's feeding guide, split into two or three meals, and adjust based on body condition rather than on how loudly the cat complains.

5. Watch the transition

A sudden switch produces loose stool, which looks like more volume but is actually a gut adjustment. Transition over 5 to 7 days. The real measurement is what the box looks like in week three, not day two.

What normal actually looks like

Indicator Healthy Worth investigating
Frequency 1–2 times a day 3+ times a day, or none for 2+ days
Size Small, compact, proportional to intake Large, bulky, multiple pieces per visit
Firmness Firm, holds shape, picks up cleanly Soft serve, liquid, or hard dry pellets
Colour Medium to dark brown Black, pale grey, or visibly bloody
Smell Noticeable but not room-filling Strong enough to clear a room

When more stool is a medical sign

Volume that increases despite a good diet can indicate malabsorption, parasites, inflammatory bowel disease, thyroid disease or diabetes. See a vet if the change comes with weight loss, increased appetite, vomiting, or a coat that has gone dull at the same time.

Where MOFU MOFU fits

Our recipes are built for exactly this problem: up to 81.1% fresh meats, 0% meat meal, grain-free, gluten-free, up to 45% protein, slow-baked at 90°C and coated with 30 billion active probiotics after baking. Fewer fillers in means less out.

Start with a 100 g trial pack, run it for three weeks, and count what you scoop. That is a more honest test than any review.

Frequently asked

How quickly does stool volume drop?

Most owners notice smaller, firmer stool within 2 to 3 weeks of a grain-free, higher-digestibility switch, after the 7-day transition period.

Is less stool always better?

Less stool from better absorption is good. No stool is a blockage risk — a cat that has not passed anything in 48 hours needs attention.

Does fibre reduce stool?

Fibre usually increases bulk and helps things move. It is useful for constipation and hairballs, not for reducing volume. For volume, digestibility is the lever.

My cat poops 3 times a day — is that normal?

It can be normal for a large cat on a high-volume diet. If each stool is also large and soft, the diet is the first thing to change.
